So the garden office project is progressing nicely. Perhaps slower than expected but it’s starting to look more like a quality construction rather than a bunch of stud walls.
The breather membrane was stapled to the frame and roofing batons nailed onto the vertical studs. Suddenly the shed looked substantial and permanent. The temporary tarpaulin has been replaced with the EPDM membrane. This has relaxed in the sun today and the creases have almost all come out. Just a couple of hours and some glue will finish this off.
Had a star find on eBay and finally bought the stainless steel nails for the larch cladding. I was shocked at the initial price of £15 a kilo! But managed to get this down to £5. Stainless steel won’t bleed into the wood or discolour over time.
Finally the sliding patio door frame was fitted and is ready for the two giant double glazed doors which will be fitted on Monday.
Hey simon, sounds like you had a busy weekend! Things have slowed down a bit my end as I had a few prior commitments – my patio door arrived though – any advice or good articles you have read on fitting the frame? Look forward to seeing some pics.
What sort of door did you go for in the end?
I haven’t read any articles on fitting the doors but I’ve fitted a few smaller ones before. more important bit is to get the frame square and level. You can buy pre-made packers from places like screwfix to help fill the gaps around the frame. They are much easier to use than wooden slices off the shop saw. Trust me!
I went for a 2090×2390 sliding patio door from Screwfix -it actually came with the packers so will hopefully have enough. I spent a while looking around ebay but saw nothing that would work for me. Will update as soon as i get to do some work on it!.
Hi Simon, many thanks for sharing your project with us, I am think of starting one myself very soon so I have been scouring the internet for some advice one that is insulated. I am proposing to build a shed/office approx 4.8m a 2.4m raised on wooden piles. I thought of using 6×2 for the joists a little like this one I have found http://s220.photobucket.com/albums/dd6/timber-works/ and insulate the floor also. Do you plan on insulating the floor if so what do you recommend? Also when you celotex inside between the frame do you plan to clad or plasterboard? What layers have you used in the roof? Is plyboard and the EPDM membrane all you need to use. Many thanks in advance and sorry for all the questions! Lewis.
I planned to use 50mm celotex under the floor and for the walls too, however part of the build was to reuse and recycle where possible so I have found a supplier of 2nd hand polystyrene and I’m planning to use this instead. Whilst it’s not such a good product I’m saving in the region of £150.
Internal walls are to be finished in plasterboard.
Spend money on nice cladding. It’s what you will look at everyday.
Btw roof is EPDM glued to 12mm ply -100mm fiberglass insulation – 12mm plasterboard.
